Story Set

Story Set
Where was west side story set, west of new york or east?

I’m really confused, some tell me its in east but the directors didn’t like the sound of east side story so they changed and some tell me its set in west.
Thanks

the story took place on the east side of new york, but the director changed the title to “west side story” because he liked the sound of it much better
