Self Help Psychotherapy

Is Psychotherapy a good treatment for anxiety?
I have been suffering for many years with these conditions
always dizzy and cant balance my self
body shivers
chest palpitates
pains in my chest and hands
breathing problems
choking problems fear and panic attacks
I cant find a cure for this illness after all tests have been done. doctors think i am mad . one kind doctor told me that i suffer anxiety and Psychotherapy may help to reduce my symptoms
What do you think?
The dizziness and inability to balance sounds a bit like vertigo. If you don’t have high blood pressure and your heart is working OK then I would say that you may have a problem with stress.
You could possibly benefit from therapy for the fear and panic attacks if you are frightened of things that are not realistic problems. I would try this if you can manage it. If you are in Australia you can get some psychotherapy under Medicare with a doctor’s referral. This means that you don’t have to pay for it. I think that it is about 6 month worth. If you are in the USA you will be paying up front. Other countries vary according to your system.
Cheers!!!

A Comprehensive Guide to Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults: Research, Diagnosis and Treatment $79.95 A Comprehensive Guide to Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults begins by addressing the history of ADD and the evolution of our understanding of the disorder. The neurobiology of ADD is examined, laying a solid foundation for the clinician to develop a scientific understanding of this complex syndrome. The assessment and differential diagnosis of ADD is examined from the perspectives of a variety of specialists in the field. This includes an exploration of the interrelationships between attention deficit disorder and other neurodevelopmental disabilities that may interact with ADD to affect cognitive functioning, and an examination of the connections between ADD and a host of psychiatric conditions. Also covered is the process of differential diagnosis from a neurological perspective, which will help the nonmedically trained clinician to better determine when a complete neurological evaluation seems warranted in the assessment process. Authors examine ADD with and without hyperactivity and describe a wide range of assessment tools that can be useful in developing a full diagnostic picture of different conditions that must be addressed in treating adults with the disorder. A wealth of experience, highly practical suggestions, and an optimistic outlook are the hallmark of the section on treatment. The authors strongly recommend a multifaceted treatment plan combining medication, psychotherapy, and addressing the pervasive self-esteem issues that typically haunt the adult whose condition has gone untreated. The volume concludes with a discussion of the legal implications of the diagnosis of ADD in adults as it pertains to education and employment, the important role of support groups foradults with ADD, and a thought-provoking examination of current and future research including the need for increased public recognition of ADD in adults. |

Breaking the Patterns of Depression $15.95 Twenty to thirty million Americans suffer from some form of diagnosable depression, and their ranks are growing. Psychologist Michael D. Yapko explains that in order to find relief, more than the current episode of depression must be examined. In Breaking the Patterns of Depression, he presents skills that enable readers to understand and ultimately avert depression’s recurring cycles. Focusing on future prevention as well as initial treatment, the book includes over one hundred structured activities to help sufferers learn the skills necessary to become and remain depression-free. Breaking the Patterns of Depression begins by translating the clinical literature on psychotherapy and antidepressant medication into language that can be used to enhance an understanding of depression, and to personalize individual cures. Yapko uses a conversational, anecdotal tone that encourages readers to take an active approach to helping themselves. Special sections entitled Learn by Doing and Shifting Perspectives help develop the skills necessary to manage difficult experiences. Readers learn how to solve problems effectively, anticipate the likely consequences of their actions, think and act in a direct, goal-oriented fashion, balance different areas of their lives, and use self-knowledge to stay out of harmful situations. More realistic and helpful than other depression-management books on the market, Breaking the Patterns of Depression defines what causes depression and, best of all, clarifies what can be done about it. With this knowledge in hand, readers can control their depression, rather than having depression control them. |
